I knew Maggie quite well, in my youth they lived in Lord Street and went to St Andrews Sunday School. She was a wonderful singer. Arouind 1939 there was a concert at St. Andrews and maggie sang a duet with a sailor who's name I cannot remember but I remember the duet.

Ida Ridding was a teacher of dancing. My sister Kathleen (Who lives in Accrington now) went to her classes for many years. Each year the school staged a show at Ossy Town Hall, I sold programmes and Kathleen did a solo dance to the tune Blaze Away I think it was 1940-41. That night there was an air raid and bombs were dropped on the town (I think it was Bent Street). After the show father took us to see the damage. Ida's family and my family were good friends.

Hello Mike, Just to let you know I have placed a link from my SmithProject Website to one of your pages - one of the images of Immanuel Church, Ossy. Please will you check that the Gateway I've produced is acceptable to you - or would you like me to add any more introductory comments in the little Gateway - or can I re-produce one of your images to display here? Could you tell me your surname then I can add photographer's full name in the introduction?(Your photographs are brilliant & I love your slide-show idea - its great). The Gateway I already made at present is temporarily in the "Smith Interests" listing, following Fiona Hall's Smith of Ossy Interests summary & her website gateway. This is listed numerically under Fiona's Researcher ID 35-FIH, on page http://www.communigate.co.uk/lancs/eastlancssmithfamilies/page13.phtml But if you agree, I would also like to add something about your site, perhaps an image & a link on the Project's page 8 "Some East Lancs Churches Pics & Links". Would this be OK please. Only recently started this Churches Pics & Links page - I'm going to improve the presentation of it as soon as I can. Hope to hear from you. Thanks very much. Carole Blackburn, Lancs

Hello - can you tell me more about the naming of the Aspen Valley. Seems you have some proof that this is not connected to the family name. I have been looking at a "twig" of the Aspden family tree for some time and most more experienced researchers have expressed this as being a farm originally owned by ancestors. Can you forward me further details that you may have please.

I was at Rhyddings from 1940 to 1943, Alec Lord was a teacher at the time, he took us for Gardening. We didnt get much gardening experience under him because my pall John Heath and I were always instructed to "get a bin" and go around picking up all the rubbish. Mr Gibson was headmaster at that time.

HI Mike You will notice a change of address, we had to close down the The Stables as we were thrown out by the Japanese landlords, now I have a hardware store in Kununurra a town in the Kimberley region in the far north of Western Australia. I have found a school photo on the web site from Rhyddings form 4A in I think it would 1961. The caption of the photo is "Rhyddings School are you here let us know" First row standing boys: Mr Frankland head master, Eric Fox, Gordon Lamb, Head Prefect forgotten name, Fred Bartram, Mick Battle, Ernie Beresford? two other forgotten Mr Fox Form master.

Wow: thanks a lot I am on the pic of the prefects at Rhyddings. I think it was 1959 or 60 and my name was Bronwen Schofield and I lived in Church. I was in the A form all the way through and my best pal was Heather Long. If she ever logs on she will be amazed to find I have moved to live in Edinburgh, Penicuik where her mother and father were born. My daughter Jacqui who lives in Florida now was also at Rhyddings in the 80's and she sent me your page, we also spotted my other daughter Carolyn who was in the 1983 pic of Rhyddings, she also lives in Edinburgh now. Thank you so much it was wonderful to see my old school and Rhyddings Park. Made me very homesick.

I remember you from Rhyddings I was Carol Herd and I have lived on the West Coast of the USA since 1965 I have always gone home frequently and I keep in touch with Sandra Aspin and Jean Remel. It is great to see all these places and people. My old friend John Scofield gave me the web site. You must have stayed in the area a while if your daughters went to Rhyddings. My daughter and son both grew up here in the States but have gone to Ossy with me. I am going over for a month next May-June and we are hoping to plan a reunion 60th Birthday at James Street. Get in touch if you want. Bye for now, Carol

I think you are doing a marvellous job. I was born at my Gran's house East Cliffe at the corner of Pot House Lane and am now working in Tokyo...after many lomg years working in Europe. I feel very attached to Oswaldtwistle and would like to know more about the area. My mother Anne Whittaker (nee Kenneford) was born at Jackhouse but I have very little information about the place. The last time I was back in Ossy I was surprised the Plough - when asked for Hollands pie and peas - sais "we only do Mexican" - what is the world coming to ????!!!!

I think you are a little early with your date. I came back living in Ossy at age seven that is 1936. I went to St. Andrews school, we had a day off when it was felled just in case it went the wrong way, so it would be 1936 to 1938 when it came down.

This Photo was taken outside, the sweet and tobacconist shop (now the co-op) 272 Union Road and was owned by the subjects Grandfather who was Mr. Charles Woodworth, the shop had been in the family for years, Charles Woodworth was known as "Crafty" as he used to sell single ciggarettes and was even known to cut a toffee in half to attain the correct weight on the scales, later the subject of the photo's sister took over from her granfather and ran the shop until it closed making way for the gateways store, there were 20 years between the 2 sisters the one in the picture being the youngest. The original Woodworth Family were: Evelyn (the picture subjects mother) Harold, Elizabeth and Fred, Elizabeth married Albert Benson and they ran and owned Eagle Coaches (New Lane Ossy) which was taken over by Frazers now known as Frazer Eagle, keeping the Eagle name, Elizabeth or 'Betty' had 3 children, Patricia, Alan and Raymond, Patricia still lives in New Lane and she married Volney Croston (who has since died) they had the 'Croston school of motoring'......... Years ago the Woodworths as a family live on Green street New lane, (all the family lived along Green street) and even had there own pew in Imanuel Church.. The last remaining Woodworth that live on Green street was called Richard and passed away many years ago.

HI there I have read your post with great interest. Albert and Betty Benson used to live on Eagle St off New Lane, which is where I think they got the name Eagle Coaches from. I can remember them living there at I think it was No 2 before they had their new house built on the corner of Grove St and New Lane probably around 1956 not too sure about the exact year. I think you may be mistaken abou Woodworths living on Green st that was on street up from Eagle St. From memory Woodworths used to live at number 10 Eagle St next door to my Auntie and Uncle, Tilly and Joe Read. In the mid '50's the Benson also had an allotment on Eagle st almost opposite their house, Alan and his mates always use to collect Bon Fire wood for Bon Fire Plot their fire was always one of the biggest in the district. I can remember one year when the blistered the paint on front of Westalls house, no 1 Eagle st. The back alley was closed for several days after 5th November with the burning embers of their Bon Fire. Does anyone know where Michael Westall is these days?

This photo taken by Garth Dawson was my father and mother Herbert and Margaret Hindle on their 50th Wedding anniversary. Father was a driver for most of his life and has driven almost everything from dustcarts to trams. Mother was a weaver and managed four looms until she retired at 60. They had two spells living in Accrington; one just after I was born for about six years in India Street and one for about four years when they had a confectioners shop in Richmond Street. They have lived in Cross Street (three houses), Trinity Street and Foxhill Terrace. After father died, mother went to live in Havelock Street. Those were the days that you didnt lock your doors as there was nothing to pinch.
